Eating out

Portugese Villa

Sample mouth-watering local cuisine, in particular the seafood - accompanied of course, by the Region's excellent local wine. You will find eating out is both affordable and satisfying. The West Region truly has something for everyone.

You can eat well in the resort both at the Marriott and the Clubhouse. If you want to sample good local cuisine you will find plenty but you will find it helpful to be guided. This area is not developed for tourism and many of the restaurants serve local people and Portuguese visitors. As a result they sell good value local food. Some are very good at serving the European visitors and almost all speak good English and often have English menus.

It is also worth saying that the Portuguese are extremely friendly, laid back and welcoming where ever you go. You rarely need to dress up to go out, quite the opposite the Portuguese just don’t! Obviously you may prefer to dress up for dining at the Marriott.

In our experience these are good places to start:

Rio Cortico for very laid back lunches and suppers and for great seafood in a beautiful beachside spot where you can watch the sun set. Our favourite every time! We recommend you ask them to tell you about the fish before you order. Sometimes they have fish that has been caught within the hour! Outside the main season opening hours are limited. Do not be put off by the long dusty track down to the restaurant or the ‘beach hut’ demeanour!

Rio Cortico Lagoa The sister restaurant to Rio Cortico and a recent addition. A much larger and more contemporary restaurant compared with the beach shack but it serves the same delicious yet simple menu of mainly fresh fish. There is plenty of space here and also a fantastic terrace which has amazing views of the lagoon! A real must!

Cozhina d’el Rey – Situated in Serra D’el Rey (the little village closest to PDR). It looks like an ex-car show room from the outside, next to the supermarket. Very welcoming owners, brilliant with kids and very extensive menu with pasta, meat and fish dishes and excellent stone baked pizzas.

Tribeca – Also in Serra D'el Rey the restaurant is of a Portuguese/French style brasserie. It's made up of three different areas: the main dining room with a separate smoking area, the bar and the patio. The patio, decorated in warm Mediterranean colours, is the ideal setting to enjoy the sun during lunch and the mild summer nights at dinner.

Restaurants in Peniche – There are many all of which we suspect would serve equally good and very fresh fish. Peniche is very un-flash! Real Portuguese, very friendly and excellent value for money. Don’t be put off, dress down blend in and you will have a good meal. The two that we have tried are O Amaral, which is tucked behind the church on the cobbled streets and O Pedro which is on the roadside alongside a number of other restaurants (the one with the yellow awning). We would like your views on any others you try. The pack also includes a brochure with pictures of all the restaurants in Peniche.

Restaurants in Obidos – There are many restaurants, which we have yet to try but we have eaten at the Poussada at the very top of the hill. The restaurant here is excellent and a good opportunity to dress up a bit smarter for a special meal. It is more expensive than the average restaurant but still good value. It’s quite a long walk depending on where you park in Obidos and mostly cobbled streets so chose footwear wisely. The walk however is lovely as you wind through the pretty streets and there are various other bars for you to stop for a drink before or after dinner.

We provide a guide of restaurants which will be in the apartment directory for you to use.
